Standalone – These are most suitable for vehicle use, they are ready to use straight from the box, most are complete with car mounting kits and full UK mapping
PDA – Personal Digital Assistant, most enable you to organise your calendar, contacts, to do list, music, photos and more – on the go, as well as built in GPS navigation
Handheld - These are designed for the outdoors, whether it's the activity of hiking, fishing, or general walks, they have rugged designs that can withstand knocks, most are water proof and have long battery life

Most SatNav's feature the following:

Voice direction - Helpful spoken step by step directions so you don't have to take your eyes off the road
Estimated time of arrival - Gives you an approximate time for your journey, useful for planning ahead.
Automatic route update - If you do take a wrong turn the system will automatically re-calculate the quickest route from that point.
Points of interest - Be alerted to local interests, including restaurants, parks, hotels, cash points and cinemas.
Road exclusion - You are able to enter roads which you want to avoid, such as certain motorways, or whether you are aware of any road works on your route.
Bluetooth - Generally the more expensive models come equipped with Bluetooth technology, which means you can use hands free via the sat nav speaker, and navigate your mobile phone with the GPS system
