Which Sat Nav?

So you've made the decision to buy a new sat nav but with so many different makers and models you don't know which sat nav is best and which one to get for your budget. You ask all your friends and family who already own a sat nav and they tell you that they have the best one and you should spend your hard earned money on that model.

So, which sat nav should you buy?

The top brands currently making all the headlines are the TomTom and the Garmin brands. With numerous models costing from as little as £99 you can be taking advantage of the latest GPS technology with some great mapping software to boot.

For example the TomTom One GB V3 is only £99 at Amazon and Dixons. These are great prices and only 6 months ago the same model of TomTom cost at least £130 in some stores and online shps.

And if you want something with a slightly bigger screen then the TomTom XL GB at £125 from The Link, Amazon and Dixons is also a great buy for 2008. The XL has a 4.3" screen compared to the 3.5" screen of its smaller brother, the One GB.

Which sat nav to but should also be determined by how big or small the unit is when it is mounted on your windscreen and also whether it can be removed from your car and carried around for safe keeping.

A lot of the latest sat nav models are now designed to be a lot more portable and devices such as the Garmin Nuvi and TomTom devices are small enough to slip into a jacket pocket if you need to take with you when away from your car.

Another option to consider when working out which sat nav to buy is whether you need it to provide traffic information. Most makers now offer a 'Traffic' version of a few of their models.

For example the new TomTom GO 720T offers the latest and most up-to-date traffic information through its compatibility with RDS-TMC Traffic and TomTom's Traffic subscription, making drivers' journeys more efficient and stress-free. The enhanced traffic information user interface provides drivers with the most accurate route calculation by taking into account the current traffic information on the road and giving precise information about traffic incidents.

With so many options now being offered with the latest sat nav devices you really need to do your homework when deciding on which sat nav to buy. But if you are new to the sat nav scene then you wont go wrong wth the TomTom One GB. And if you are feeling a little more adventurous and want some more 'bells and whistles' then the TomTom 720T is another great buy.
